Skull Candy

An open letter to Skull Candy...

TO: CEO of Skull Candy FROM: Deb Dekoff

RE: generosity

Dear SkullCandy:

Finding out you have cancer sucks. Finding out that it has to be fought through chemo therapy drugs sucks even more. Finding out that the drugs that will be pumped into you for twelve weeks will take your hair, will make you sick, will cause you to feel fatigued - well, let's just say knowing all of that is depressing. But off to chemo I go.

And there, I sat, in my reclining chemo chair at the Huntsman: scared, nervous, filled with anxiety. Needing music to take my mind away, to create a sense of "I'm not really here" - I took out my iPad, hoping to tune in to Pandora - maybe some BB, Buddy, Guy, or my fave - Jonny Lang (yeah, chemo does give one the blues) . I turned on my music low, trying to get lost in the song "A Quitter Never Wins" when my chemo nurse said, "I have a gift for you - from Skull Candy."

And in her outreaching hands was a box of headphones. What? Mint green and white Crushers with super soft padding.

Let me tell you - that gift of Crusher headphones is the best thing about chemo days. Knowing I can tune in to great music and tune out the fact I'm in a cancer infusion room really helps.

So, thank you, Skull Candy - for your amazingly generous gift. You made my day. In fact, you make every Tuesday infusion day a bit better.

Grateful,

Deb Dekoff
