Nancy Jill's Cancer Alphabet: G

Today’s post features the letter G for girls. How are your girls? Your tatas? What other nicknames can you think of for breasts? Have you seen those nicknames used to market pink merchandise? What you call breasts in private really doesn’t matter. Your cute nickname is fine for you. And as with most body part nicknames, those for breasts tend to be cute and funny. But when these terms are used as part of public discourse, and as part of breast cancer awareness they do two damaging things. They trivialize the seriousness of breast cancer and they separate the breasts from the women to whom they are attached. Most breast cancer awareness marketing is focused on the color pink, trivializing or glamorizing cancer, and on breasts rather than on the people whose lives are ruined or shortened by breast cancer. Let’s change the dialogue. Let’s focus on learning why cancer spreads and kills so many, and why it doesn’t. Let’s spend money on research. Let’s provide concrete assistance to women, men and their families who are affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. Let’s save women, not tatas. #metavivor #mbc #pinktober
